Wednesday...day 6... :D

Hello everybody! Lottie and Catherine here writing to you about (in our opinion) the best day we have had so far.

Well...once again we apologise for how late this post is, our non stop schedule and lack of Wifi have made keeping you up to date difficult (plus we like to keep you on your toes, otherwise you just wouldn't appreciate how much you miss us).

Wednesday started bright and early with a brand new school, they weren't expecting us but due to the miserable weather (rain and fog!), we had to visit a school who's journey was traversable (Lottie doesn't know the meaning of this...). After the head teacher rounded up some 300 local kids and others were drawn in, by the sound of our musical talents, some even came from their classes, lessons began!

Our 3 hours with the children resulted, not only in their learning, but also in ours. Personally, we (Catherine and Lottie) learned "gwapaneka" a 'fist pumping' greeting for the cool kids (a group we of course belong to). As a group we also learned a new song called "Like I do, like I do!" - a far more musical version of Simon says.

A vital detail which we have hitherto left out is that our truck (Terrance) was feeling unwell and so remained in bed whilst we travelled in far more comfortable style (the boots of land rovers!)

After our day at school we picked up our skirts from the tailors (most of which fit) by journeying through the narrow, local market, which was a very exhilarating experience, and scary (says Lottie).

Our journey back to Fisherman's Rest was again in car boots; one of which closely resembled a cage. Banas (one of our translators/helpers/newfound friends) cut his head on the door and we spent dinner applying first aid (through the very able Kirsty). Banas and Blessings (Mphotso in Chacheywa) then joined us for lunch.

A few of the more brave members of our group (including the EXTREMELY brave big Lucy) took a dip in the pool which was, of course, EXTREMELY chilly. Unfortunately a few members of our group are now in hospital suffering from hypothermia...NOT!!!!!

Hahaha LOL

After the feeling had returned to our icy limbs the group prepared EVEN more craft materials before having a more sociable evening.

We had prepared chilli con caren, and then took it to the other house as there was a local band there. We spent the first 20 long minutes waiting for the other group and eating. On meeting the other group, we decided they hadn't been worth the wait!!!!!!!!!

We spent the rest of the evening dancing to the Malawian music with Banas and Blessings, learning new moves and playing "like I do, like I do". We can all say that it was scary watching Banas' crazy legs; as his top half was STILL and his legs were w.o.w. Although we do admire his grooving abilities. After dancing away hours (whipping out the dad dancing) and laughing the night away we had to say goodbye to Banas and Blessings and go inside to watch a film.

It was a documentary about a Malawian man who was taught to paraglide by a Canadian whom he had met only three weeks before flying down Mount Mulanje.  We then met the man who had achieved his dream before retiring for the night. We all felt that we would have enjoyed the movie far more if it had been earlier on in the day as our action packed agendas leave us wanting nothing but sleep by around 9'o'clock in the evening (it also leaves us with no time to be homesick or miss you, sometimes we even have to remind ourselves what your names are ;)

And so we leave you, tired but happy after a productive and rewarding day.

Dear Williams/jones family,
Hiya nan and Lauren (when she gets home) Having a fab time, sad to say I'm not really missing home that much and actually hardly thought about my phone! You will be pleased to here I am still in one piece! I hope my room is looking good! We have done loads and looking forward to the rest of the week and to docs(the bus driver) meal tomorrow! The schools we go to are amazing and such a different experience to England!!!!! Thank you all soooo much for the lovely comments/messages you have sent me. I wasn't feeling very well earlier so it was lovely to hear from you all. To Alain and Christian if you are reading this then I have two things to say to you. Firstly, where are my messages?! Secondly, I am actually starting to miss your techy convocations!
One of my leaders (Lucy) is currently showing us how many different types of moustache you can make out of one pipe cleaner. It is safe to say I may come home being even more crazy than when I left with this kind of influence on me  for three weeks! If only you could have seen all our leaders dancing earlier!
To Lizzie I promise I will name any hippos I meet josh and Gladys but I can't promise to marry them unless they agree and they may decide to eat me if they don't like the idea....
Thank you for the catch up on news and say well done to dad and tell Lee to shush his gums. To Auntie Laura, yes we are in a different house to the one on the video but it is very similar and on the site still. The only difference is we share the pool with the other house and it is slightly bigger bedroom wise as we have more people than the other group does.

Dear Meachin family,
Hope you are all having lovely weather in England, it's pouring with rain here today! I am having an amazing time here and laughing soooo much :)
Ok so you will probably laugh once you've read this all the way through, but well.......I broke my finger on Tuesday. (First person to injure themselves!) I was playing football with some of the kids at the community centre down the road from where we are staying. Anyway I was goalie, the ball came flying towards me and ended up smashing my finger. But I did save the goal which is what counts :) please don't worry I am absolutely fine, all bandaged up and I can't feel a thing. My finger was a lovely blackish purple this morning :D so I guess I will need to go to A&E when I get back haha
Mum and Olivia: have fun in Russia (hope you're packed by now!) liv try not to let mum spend a fortune and remember to leave some Russian dolls behind for the other tourists :)
Dad: hope everything and work is going ok. Sorry to disappoint you but I am absolutely terrible at football! Duff genes again I think ;)

Hello Mumma, Daddy and Fais Parker!

Mumma, WS prep sounds good and it looks like you are ver organised! I'm looking forward to the sewing/swearing session too and my skirt is amazing and I love it and it fits perfectly! Faith,  your comments are amazing and hilarious and I love them and your hair sounds super cool! What colour is it? I have now been in the pool and it was cold and I have seen an impala too! Also, I have found no more notes? Clues please!! Have a great time at WS and make sure you tell everyone in the 5th that I say hi and am thinking of them! Their craft supplies are being very much appreciated!

Cathefrina, the island idea sounds good, I will stay with you plz and the weather with you sounds better than the continual misty rainy weather with us! Dear Hermitage and Mills followers,
I am ok, and enjoying my 'note a day'. Sadly, the Pringles are running low, but I did get hold of some bourbons today at the shop. Loving the comments on the blog, and also that you are feeding Carwyn, I'm sure he is wasting away. Mum, after all the crafts we have done here, I am pretty sure I have a new term planned for rainbows, and at least, without me there, u will be up do date with county work. Lala, tell fin, I have only showered once, and I shared it with a lizard, plus I haven't changed my trousers since I left England. Tell Katy I saw a spider about 3 inches wide today (including legs) and took a very brave photo for her. I have tried texting/emailing, but it normally seems u guys don't get it :(.
All those who donated to see me burnt, I feel u may be disappointed....more likely to me wrinkly and wet. Probably shouldn't have sung 'singing in the rain'...lesson learnt.

A big  heddo to Mumzi (treacle) Hadgrid and Orphan kid. ah also J-girl if you are reading this. Having a wonderful time in Malawi and missing you all lots. Being kept busy and having a wonderful time at the schools. I've caused mayhem at meal times along with leader lucy breaking out into song at random times and using various utensils to make musical instruments! Hadgrid I've sung a few musicals too!
Will continue to keep you updated, keep following the blog, I must warn you the girls are responsible for the majority of the posts on here and they do get carried away. On the way home from a school the other day I have to ride in the back of a truck which was more of an animal cage! Anyway. Hope all is well, lots of love to everyone I know at home reading this. I hope those of you in Scotland are enjoying it, that one in Europe is loving it and that sibling in Thailand is still fully functioning :) the weather here has taken a turn for the worse and we might as well be in England :( but the schools are still fun and the people are still lovely and I'm not sick of them yet!!! I hope you are all having a wonderful time wherever you are and I'm looking forward to seeing you when I get home in a couple of weeks (and hearing Aaron's good ;) news) and fingers crossed I shall have some awesome things for you all :)

We are all having a fab time here(as you may have read) although the weather has been atrocious the last couple of days so don't think I will be coming back with much of a tan :( Mont,you will be pleased to know that I have not lost the ring yet! Hi Rabble, Martyn and anyone else that knows me,
Having a fab time. The weather has been quite wet so it feels like home! The schools have been great, and the kids have really enjoyed themselves, although we have had a few crayon thieves! One boy rolled up his jeans with 6 crayons in. Mum and Dad we nearly had 2 extra members of the family, there were twins at one of the schools and I am pretty sure they would have fitted in the holdalls to come home! Rachel, I think I am in competition with you for bites! I don't have anywhere near as many as you did in Thailand but I have been bitten on my lip! Doc the bus driver (although he insists we call it a truck) is great and has even joined in with our dancing and singing. Banes, Ernest and Blessings, our BookBus guides are amazing and have been a great help with translating. Please make sure there is lots of hot water for a shower when I get home, at the moment Chloe and I am in competition for being the smelliest as we haven't found much time for a shower!

Terence the truck breaks down

Tuesday's eventful day, sorry it's so late.

Today was funny, at the school this morning  there were many children, four of us (little) Vicky, (little) Lucy, Catherine and Frankie managed to control and entertain 85 children over the course of the morning. This was only made possible with the help of one of our translators/ helpers named Banas, who is very good with the kids and got them under control in such a small room.

Towards the end of the morning, whilst singing and dancing with the kids outside the heavens opened and it started pouring with rain. We all ran for shelter into this one classroom which became very cramped, and impossible to move around in.

Suddenly our truck driver, Doc, came running out yelling that we needed to leave otherwise the truck would get stuck on the off road dirt tracks. We were all rather confused but ran over to the bus carrying as much as we could and shoved it in as we were in a rush to get on our way. Then as we were driving up the steep hill, we came across a problem. Terence the truck (as we christened it, Terry for short) had issues getting up the hill! We all ended up getting out and climbing up the hill ourselves and, luckily, Terence made it up without us with the help of some wooden blocks.

Later on in the afternoon, some of us (Catherine, Lottie and Frankie) went to go see Doc the truck driver and he told us all about where's he's been in Africa which consisted of almost all of Southern Africa except from Lesotho!

Later in the afternoon, we all went down to the Tiltlonse Community centre which is just a short walk away from our lodge. Some of us helped out in the IT class there, which consisted of showing them how to change font, size, colour etc. Others were outside playing with the children, we discovered whilst playing football that most of them support Manchester United. Then we helped out with the feeding programme which gives a cup of maize porridge to everyone at the centre to make sure they at least get one meal a day.

The Tiltlonse Community Centre is run by Fisherman's Rest and its workers and runs learning programmes every afternoon including maths, English and IT. It also runs a feeding programme which feeds everyone that's at the centre a cup of porridge. We have been lucky enough to partake in these, helping out where we can.

After we got back we discovered that we had no electricity. Which meant we had to prepare all the craft materials and dinner by torch light! Ellie, Chloe and Helen managed to battle through having no power cooking, and produce the best meal we have had so far.

After dinner although we had no electricity and our craft preparing was taking for ever our spirits were still high, and we continued to loudly sing, ranging from under the sea, Queen, high school musical and a bit of Bob Marley, don't worry about a thing.

We all went to bed still singing but tired.

Our First Book Bus Day!

*Sorry for not posting yesterday! It got a bit too late to walk up the hill where the wifi is to post it!*

Just to clarify, as many people seem concerned, we have not yet been in the pool as it is outside another house, you have to walk up a hill to get there and we haven't had time yet!!

Hello! It's been a long day today...!

Two of us were up at 5:30 so we could shower and everyone else emerged at 6am and we had to get dressed and eat breakfast super quickly so that we were ready to leave at 7:15! The school today was much closer than we anticipated and the views from the bus on the way down the mountain were incredible! 

We arrived early, but started straight away with the children that were already there. They were all smiling and seemed happy to see us! We put out the mats and split the children up into younger and older groups and then started the teaching. We read through  'Giraffe's Can't Dance' first with the older children and then allowed them to look through and read it out loud to us. Next we went through the worksheets with them and completed the craft activity- making beautiful butterflies! Once they'd finished that, we had a massive sing song and gaming session in a circle. They were all so enthusiastic and, consequently, we spent the rest of the morning singing more than doing anything else! Just before we left, we caused mayhem by whipping out our cameras! Every child wanted their photo taken and especially to see the photo afterwards so it all turned to chaos mostly...! 

We then boarded the bus and set off, with all the children still waving and smiling at us. They even ran to the road to wave as we drove past again! 

It was an incredible first day, as we were so unsure as of what to expect and how the children would behave when we were teaching them. We are all so excited now about the next two weeks ahead and it is just so humbling to know that our actions here in Malawi will make so many children laugh and smile!

When we got back to the house, we ate some massive rolls for lunch and washed up really quickly so we could go into Blantyre again. On the journey into Blantyre, it was very hard not to nod off, but the bumpy roads made sure we were jolted awake every few minutes! We went into the main shopping street first and visited a fabric shops to pick out our material for some African clothes. It took a while, but we managed to pick out some material and it is all very colourful and beautiful. We then went to Shoprite (the local shop) quickly so the leaders could buy some more water and snacks to take to the schools for the rest of the week (our food shopping cost much less than the money given to us for food and so we can use it to feed the children in the schools!) and then we stopped off at a tailors on the way home to put in our orders for skirts. They measured us and we described the sort of thing we wanted! 

Now we are home and are organising a shower rota as we don't have too much water. We are also, more importantly, busy sorting out the crafts for tomorrow and ensuring we have enough worksheets and craft templates. 

We're having a typically British dinner of sausage and mash and then I'm sure we will try and go to bed as soon as possible after that! Much tiredness! 

Now we'd thought that I'd (hi, it's Ellie here) stop writing for a bit and let you all hear personally from all the other girls in the group too!

FRANKIE

I'm glad today went well as I rarely have contact with young children and haven't sung some of the songs for quite a few years!! 

(To mum: I pretty much don't have hay fever but I still take the pill every morning.)

LAURA

Easier at school than I expected however from going to three groups of four to at least 20 was amazing how it suddenly dawned on me. Then the gratefulness of the children- I finally realised that they don't see any problem with the conditions they live in so we shouldn't feel sorry for them like some Africa help ads but they are happy.  

RACHEL

I thought that kids here would be a lot quieter and unhappier here than at home, but actually they are exactly the same. They are cheeky, loud and interested in everything. My favourite moment was when they sang loads of their songs to us. I also loved seeing them smiling and laughing! 

ELEANA

Working with children was a real reality slap. Rachel and I went from having 3 kids to around 70 in half an hour! I was amazed at how easily entertained they were, I spent about an hour at the head of a massive circle leading head, shoulders, knees and toes and simple hand actions to around 80 kids. Even my 1 -2 year olds understood counting games and the hokey kokey. It was draining keeping the books the centre of attention but it was 100% worth it!!!

LUCY (Leader!)

Working with the children today was lovely, and their English was pretty good. I really enjoyed teaching them songs and was proud of their rendition of 'heads, shoulders, knees and toes' after being taught. I think I may need to wash my feet (Lala, I have tiger stripes like jelly shoes!) but it's not my rota day, or maybe it is, I don't know. My highlight was doing the bear hunt with a massive circle - 50 children 'swirling in the wind' was quite a sight. Photos aplenty :) love to everyone I know :) xxx

KIRSTY 

Had a fantabulous Day at school today singing songs and making lots of messy crafts. Was very strange to see how different the schools here where and the children's ability. Nevertheless an amazing day! Bring on day two at school. Lots of love to everyone at home! Xxx

Heya all. I'm having a great time. The kids were very good today such and amazing experience. They loved a song me and Ellie made up. Love the note, Mum about Ian and Dad and even listened to the song and did the dance! :P More notes to come YAY! Love to all xxxxxxxxx

Hello everybody! Can I please just ask my family to not read the blog subsequent to this comment as Ellie's thoroughness is doing a Dad and leaving me nothing to tell you when I get home (I'm sure you'll enjoy my tales far more in person). But anyway, I'm having an amazing time and am enjoying myself tonnes ( although I am a little disappointed in you as other girls got love notes, I feel unwanted!) school was amazing today and I can definitely say that the three weeks ahead of me look bright and I anticipate them eagerly. Love you all lots (I listened to 'Hey Julie' for you mum and thought of you!) I'd say I'm missing you but I'd be lying (not really I miss you lots!) Tra for now xxxx oh and  Izzy I haven't been eaten yet! :o

CHANTE 

I just wanna shout to all my fans back at home, lol I joke. Hey everyone, how you all doing? I'm great here in the mother country of Africa, having an experience of a life time; teaching, playing, laughing and joking. Yesterday I had a day full of rest and sleep and today I was equip for the challenges that faced me. It was wonderful seeing the children smiles and eagerness to learn. Making snakes and singing songs was my main highlight, just seeing them happy and full of joy made me warm inside. I was delighted to be chosen to donate books to the school we was at today. The head teacher  was ever so grateful and the children seemed to want them straight away with "give me a book!" Oh yeah I forget to say I was sick this morning after taking my malaria tablet, whoops! But other than that having a fabulous time, missing you all loads. Give Shay and Cyrus a kiss for me. Taraa! xo

ABBIE

heya! Having a great time and can safely say that all the hard work that was put into getting me out here by all my loved ones was sooooo worth it! Prepare to receive a changed Abbie after the course of this trip! 

Thank you very much to those close to me who wrote comments on this blog. I had a bit of a down moment earlier when we had to leave our first school this morning but when I thought back to your comments they really cheered me up. Would love to receive more comments and hear any of your news as well as you hearing ours! Oh! Purely for Lizzie's benefit I have not yet sat on any Hippos. Yet! 

Wishing you were all here to share this amazing experience with me. You will all be getting big hugs and kisses when I get back but I warn those of you who will be (if you still want me) picking me up from the airport I probably won't be smelling the best... Our shower situation combined with the amount of dust we get in our clothes and hair when we go out means a slightly smelly Abbie!

Don't really know what to say, Ellie has said it all really! Just really enjoying myself, having great fun and can't wait for tomorrow and do it all again. Would say to mum and dad that I m missing you but your probably not reading this anyway, and to be honest haven't thought about it, I m sure your not missing me anyway.oh and mum does it have to be death by hippo or can I find some other interesting way to die? Maybe swallowed whole by a snake? Or fall off the edge of cliff while taking an outside shower? And no Harry we have not seen a pygmy giraffe ;) Anyway probably said enough now so bye bye xxx

Hi Guys! Having lots of fun and would say I miss you but you know I don't so... Also feeling a tad unloved without any notes (sobs dramatically) but I'm sure you'll be able to make it up to me when I get back (within time time I'm back at least!) 

Hope Portugal is fun, lots of golf and sunbathing, reading etc. but I bet there's no outdoor shower with a view!!!  Please say you haven't been in my room yet Dad, it will be done when I'm back!!!!!!!!

Hello! I hope you have been enjoying my blog posts everyone! I loved your comments Mumma, Daddy and Faith and Cathefrina so plz comment because I'm currently managing to read them and they make me happy and smiley instead of making me cry because I miss you. I am having so much fun, it's SO GOOD here and the mountains are beautiful, the views are stunning and everyone is really friendly. Mum and Faith, please don't expect clothing presents, because it's been measured to fit, but I've bought some material to bring home instead yay! So we can sew clothes together Mumma...? ;) Frinkley, Jonathan and Ruth I hope you are still enjoying your holiday and the weather is lovely?! Mumma, I hope WS planning is going well, Daddy I hope work is bearable and you have been on some nice bicycle rides and Buba, I hope you are having loads of fun HOLIDAYING woo! Settling in...

Hello again!

It is day 2 at the house and all us girls were treated to a lie in this morning! Till 9:30! Helen and Vicki had already left for the shops at this point with Kate, and Lucy and Kirsty were cooking us eggy bread for breakfast! We sat outside in the sunshine and enjoyed our breakfast (which also included cornflakes and bread and jam).

We then all sat outside for a while playing around on the hammock and sitting and enjoying the view. Some of us filmed a house tour which I am sure friends and family will enjoy watching when we get home!

When Helen and Vicki returned from the shops, we all walked up the hill to carry the food for them and once everything was unpacked, we sat and ate sandwiches for lunch. We also tried a new squash, which was raspberry flavoured. It tasted like liquid jelly (good for some, bad for others) and tasted much nicer as a milkshake.

After lunch, we buddied up and spent the next few hours prepping for school tomorrow. Lottie and I (Ellie) drew out 100 butterfly templates, decorated two as examples and made up a butterfly song! (Little) Vicky, Lucy, Catherine, Chante, Abbie and Frankie made 310 snake templates and coloured in 7! Eleana and Rachel made moose masks and Chloe and Laura made bear masks so now we are all ready for tomorrow. The leaders also cut up lots of tissue paper and aided elsewhere.

The sun set at 6pm again and the wind picked up so we are now prepping for dinner. We've also packed our rucksacks for tomorrow and we are sitting on the veranda eating sugar cane which Doc prepared for us.

** Doc would like to point out that he is a TRUCK DRIVER and not a bus driver. He was very insistent on this point! **
